Week 6

Production Day!
In the morning me and my friend went to the wrong room and missed the beginning of the lesion. It was about developing a magazine in a day. We were given "Trashion" - a final year project of a graduated girl. It is a fashion and culture magazine with a specific audience - young girls who love shopping and art. Also i did some articles:

Week 5

Preparing for Output

During the fifth week we learnt how to prepare a document for output. The most important aspects are: File Checking, Quality Management, Client Brief and Specification, Verification, Validation and Sign-Off and Output. We managed to understand how essential is the file checking in order to make a successful project. Also I found interesting the Project-file-cycle. Later, in pairs we had to design a sign-off form to conclude the verification of a project. That's what we did:

Week 3

The third week was about Colour and Image. We could understand how important they can be in a way of communication. In the lesion we were given some colours and we had to define what they mean to us with a noun or an adjective. The most interesting fact is that most of us had different understading of their meaning so we exchanged opinions and laughed a lot. We also tried to manipulate colour and image in InDesign.

Finally, I understood the difference between RGB and CMYK colours. For our directed study we had to make a CD Cover so i chose Justin Timberlake.
There are two logos i compared.

In Costa logo, the 'S' is distorted to look like steam. This implies the deliciousness of the hot coffee served there. The font is sans serif and the 'O' is a circle, which matches the shape of the mug the Costa coffee is served in.

Red implies of anger and passion. When peppers are coloured in red, it gives the sense that they taste hot.

Week 2

"Design is boring text and solid colours"

The second week was about Shape and Form.
In the morning we were talking about visual metaphors and their impact on the design work. We had a task called: Visualising Words, such as backward. forward, ideas, motion, conversation and we had to make shapes combined with letters. It was pretty fun! For our directed study we had to make a business card like logo with design for young people - "Bright Ideas Design" I was also looking for interesting logos so i will post some of them here.

Week One

"Every time somebody writes a letter they make design decisions"

Type and Typography

During the first week of my Visual Design Module we were introduced the concept by which we can think of "visual design"
The programme on which we are going to work is called InDesign and at first sign it seemed to me as a very difficult one. I have never worked with it so it was a challenge. The key points of the lesion were related to font face and size, line-spacing, variety of headers etc. We started working on a business card but i didn't have enough time so i did it later in the university because i can't have InDesign on my laptop. I am pretty concerned about it but i hope i will be fine.

The image is the poster of a  movie called "The Great Gatsby". The font is serif, which is a reminder that the movie is based on a classic novel. The multiple lines match the geometric frames in the background.

In the two circles above and under the name are written the initials of  the central character- Jay Gatsby. The chosen colours resemble gold and silver and imply the big fortune of the central character.

The image consists of a series of typed words, that suggest the shape of Tower Bridge. The font is Sans Serif, which implies the contemporary feeling of the picture. The colours are designed to match the colouring of the landmark.

Friday 31 January 2014

The picture is from Burberry Spring 2014 campaign. The photo depicts British actress Emma Watson as a representative of the brand. Both her and the male model are fully dressed in Burberry clothing. They seem really attracted to each other; the message clearly is that wearing Burberry would make you look desirable. They are positioned not in the centre of the picture, but  in the right side. This brings a sense of mystery and secrecy, as if the viewser is not supposed to see the scene.
